1. "We clawed back into it, but right at the very end, we had trouble making the big play," coach Scott Skiles said.
(鳳凰城太陽隊)教練說：我們奮力追回失分，但在比賽將要結束前，我們就是差「臨門一腳」。

clawed：claw當做【名詞】，是指鳥、動物的爪子。當【動詞】時，是「以爪撕裂」、「以爪抓緊」、「以爪挖掘」，進而比喻「像是以爪挖出一條路般地努力地前進」。簡單地說，就是「很努力做一件事」。

right at the very end：right，very 都有「恰好就在…的時候」之意。
had trouble making the big play：和 have difficulty一樣，have trouble 後面接另一個動詞時，要用【動名詞】的形式，如本句的 making。big play意指「很重要或很關鍵性的表現」。

2. Everyone has their role, but when you can do your role plus, that makes us a championship-caliber team," said Allen Iverson.
Allen Iverson說：每個人要扮演好自己的角色，但是如果能有更上一層的表現，我們就會是一支句冠軍相的隊伍。

do your role plus：字面是「比扮演好自己的角色做得更多」，意即有突出的表現。
makes us a championship-caliber team：make someone …是「使某人成為…」。caliber通常指槍、炮的口徑，此處是「品質」之意，championship-caliber 就是「具有冠軍的品質」。

3. The Knicks closed within four points in the final minute, but Iverson made six free throws to seal the victory.
在比賽的最後 1 分鐘，尼克隊把比分拉近到只差 4 分，但是 Iverson 罰進 6 分，穩保勝利。

closed：此處 closed當【動詞】用，是「接近」、「靠近」之意，而非「關閉」之意。
seal the victory：seal 原是「加上封印(使信件不易再打開)、密封、封緘」之意。引申的意思是指「確定某事後就不再改變」。當別人告訴你一個祕密，你若保證不會洩露出去，可以對他說"My lips are sealed." 另外，seal 當【名詞】時，有「海狗、海獅」，及「印章、圖章、印鑑、璽印」等意思。

因為 Carter 是北卡洛來那大學的校友，有幾個球迷對 Carter 大吼「北卡大學籃球隊只有五勝十負的戰績」，糗了他一頓。

taunted：奚落，糗。
Tar Heels：北卡洛來那大學籃球隊的隊名。tar 是具有黏性的焦油；heel 是腳跟。北卡大學籃球隊取這樣的隊名，意在比喻「腳跟如同沾了具有黏性的焦油」，取其堅毅「不拔」之意。

5. Nowitzki again was fouled on the inbound pass and swished his foul shots.
(達拉斯小牛隊)發球入界時，Nowitzki 再度被對方犯規，接下來他罰兩球都是空心中的。

inbound pass：從界外傳球入界，發界外球。
swished：是個【擬聲字】，像「唰」的一聲；此處當【動詞】用，意指「發出像『唰』的一聲」，即指投進「空心球」，只聽到「唰」籃網而不聞球碰籃框的聲音。

Anderson說：那的確就是有犯規-他 (Stackhouse) 把我拉住，就是這回事。

tackled：原指美式足球中防守球員將對方跑鋒、接球員、四分衛「擒抱」住，使其不能移動前進。
Period：原指標點符號中的句點。此處不能直譯：意思是「到此為止、就是這樣、沒什麼好多說的」。

底特律(活塞隊)兩晚比賽均告捷，並且報了 1 月 11 日在波士頓輸球的一箭之仇。

won for the second time in as many nights：in… nights是「在…之內」，as many是「如同前述的那個數字。」；前面提到 for the second time，因此 won for the second time in as many nights 就是won for the second time in two nights，連續兩晚都贏了。

ensuing：接下來的，= following。
the go-ahead basket：兩隊不分勝負或比數成拉鋸戰時，某隊投入一球後，從此就領先到底，這一球就是the go-ahead basket。

outrebounded：(甲隊) 籃板球數超過(乙隊)。
outscored：(甲隊) 得分超過(乙隊)。那麼，(甲隊)助攻超過(乙隊)就是 outassist了。
in the paint：paint 指籃下三秒鐘點費禁區，因為地板顏色常與禁區外地板的淺黃色不同(常為較深的顏色)；也可以說 in the painted area。

10. Cuban contends that lax officiating is leaving his star players vulnerable to serious injuries.
(達拉斯小牛隊的老闆) Cuban堅決認為，裁判執法太鬆將使得他的明星球員易受重傷。

contends：堅決認為…；另外一個可用的字是 maintain (並非「維持」之意)。
lax：鬆散的，不嚴格的。

officiating：裁判的執法。
leaving his star players…：是【leave + 人 (或事物) + 成為…的狀態】的句型。
vulnerable：易受到傷害的。後面搭配的【介系詞】用to。
