NBA 籃球英語第六集

1. The Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs were trading one-point leads in the third quarter before Steve Smith took over.
克里夫蘭騎士隊與聖安東尼馬刺隊在比賽第三節交替以一分領先對手，一直到 Steve Smith掌握了大局。

trading one-point leads：trade本意是「以物易物」的意思。如果甲隊隊領先乙隊一分，乙隊投進一球倒領先一分；接下來甲隊也投進一球再度領先一分。如此，雙方你來我往，交替以一分領先對手，像是互相買賣，用上 trade 這個字，可說是十分貼切。

took over：take over有「接管」、「接辦」、「接替」、「繼任」及其他的意思，此處是比喻Steve Smith的連續得分終止了拉鋸戰，彷彿「接管」、主宰了比賽。

2. Gill, meanwhile, fractured the small finger on his left hand.
同時，Gill左手的小指骨折。

fractured：骨折。fracture可以當做【名詞】也可以【動詞】用。a fractured finger 中的 fractured是 fracture當【動詞】時的過去分詞形式，是【形容詞】的作用，也可以說 a broken finger。
small finger：小指，也可以說 little finger。無名指：ring finger，中指：middle finger，食指：index finger，拇指：thumb，腳大拇指：big toe，腳小拇指：little toe，其他的腳拇指沒有特別名稱，依次序稱為 second toe、third toe 和 fourth toe。

3. Jones scored five of his points in overtime to help the Heat snap a two-game losing streak.
Jones在延長賽時得到5分使邁阿密(熱浪隊)終止二連敗。

snap：本意是指「突然斷掉」，此處著重在「中斷」，亦即「終止」之意。
streak：指比賽的「連續」的勝敗； winning streak 連勝，連敗。

4. Tariq Abdul-Wahad, the Denver Nuggets' best defensive player, will have an MRI exam Friday and undergo arthroscopic surgery Saturday on his left knee.
丹佛金塊對的最佳防守球員Tariq Abdul-Wahad將於星期五接受「核磁共振造影術」檢查，並於星期六進行左膝的「骨關節鏡手術」。

MRI exam：過去常用來幫助診斷病情的「電腦斷層掃描術」是 computer tomography(簡稱CT)。後來發展出3D掃描的 MRI「核磁共振造影術」，全名是 magnetic consonance imaging。另外還有一種 PET「正子放射斷層掃描術」，全名是 positron emission tomography。

arthroscopic：arthro-或arthri-是表示「關節」的字首，例如 arthropod是「身體有很多『節』的「節足動物」(-pod是「足」、「腳」的意思)，arthritis是「關節炎」(-itis是「發炎」的意思)。-scope表「觀察…的器具，…鏡，…檢查器」的字尾，例如，telescope望遠鏡，gastroscope胃內視鏡， stethoscope (醫生的)聽診器。-scopic是-scope的形容詞字尾。

5. Marshall went to the line with 15.6 seconds remaining in overtime, with Kittles jawing at him as he stepped up.
延長賽終了前15.6秒，(爵士隊)Marshall獲得罰球機會；(籃網隊) Kittles在Marshall站上罰球線時在一旁碎碎唸。

the line：即the "free throw line" 罰球線。
jawing：「碎碎唸」，「嘀嘀咕咕」講一些有的沒有的。
stepped up：挺身而出，站出來。

6. "Winning is the cure all," guard Greg Anthony said after the Bulls routed Houston 103-75 Tuesday night, sending the tired and depleted Rockets to their seventh straight loss.
星期二晚公牛隊以103比75痛宰休士頓(火箭隊) ，使筋疲力竭的火箭隊吞下七連敗。後衛 Greg Anthony說，「贏球才是萬靈丹。」

cure all：能治百病者，即是「萬靈丹」，它的同義字是 panacea。
sending…to their seventh straight loss：此處的send (someone) to…是「逼使」(某人)落到…的地步。
depleted：使…「耗盡、枯竭」；累「呆」了，也可說dead tired(此處 dead為【副詞】，是「極為…」的意思)。

7. Martin and Rogers received double technical fouls on the play that led to Rogers' flagrant foul. Martin took exception to the foul and practically wrestled Rogers down to the ground after being fouled.
Rogers 的惡性犯規造成他和 Martin被裁判吹「雙方技術犯規」。Martin被惡性犯規後，心有不甘，幾乎將 Rogers 用摔角的方式擺平在地上。

flagrant foul：「惡性犯規」。NBA規則中把「惡性犯規」分成兩級：輕者判一次技術犯規，重者判兩次技術犯規，並驅逐出場(to be ejected)。

took exception to…：1. (對…) 反對，(對…)表示異議；2. (對…)有反感，(對…感到)生氣。
practically：幾乎。
wrestled：用摔角的方式扭打。日式摔角(相撲)是 sumo wrestling，簡稱 sumo。

8. We've got to get him saying, 'In your face,' and 'Your mama,' and that stuff," said McHale.
McHale說，我們必須教會他說「在你面前」、「你媽…」之類的話。

In your face：意思是說，我就是要「在你面前」得分灌籃、蓋火鍋，你能奈我何？挑釁意味很強的一句話。
Your mama：暗指對方是「媽媽的乖寶寶」，媽媽吩咐什麼就做什麼，是個軟腳蝦，等於在說對方是個 wimp或 nerd。
stuff：…之類，叫不出名堂的東西；有人用blah, blah, blah…類似中文的「等等等…」。

9. We're working on that, it's coming slowly. I'm waiting for him to get a technical by hanging on the rim, then swinging, then slapping the backboard. "It's still 101, we're going to work on the advanced courses later.
我們還在努力，達成目標會慢一點。我心理準備好有朝一日他會因為「吊在籃框上，還擺一擺身體，拍兩拍籃板」被裁判吹技術犯規。現在他的功力才只不過還在「初級課程」的階段，我們準備以後訓練他達到「高級課程段」的地步。

technical：技術犯規，是 technical foul 的簡稱。
101：初級課程。美國大學課程的代號，通常編號101的多是「初級課程」。

10. Los Angeles Clippers star Lamar Odom was reinstated by the NBA on Wednesday after being suspended for violating terms of the league's anti-drug policy. The 22-year-old forward will be eligible to play Thursday night against the New Jersey Nets at Staples Center.
因未遵守反毒規定而被 NBA 聯盟禁止出賽的洛杉磯快艇隊明星球員 Lamar Odom在星期三解除禁賽的處分。這位22歲的前鋒將於星期四晚間返回 Staples Center 球場出戰紐澤西籃網隊。

reinstated：恢復資格、權利。
suspended：停止…的權利，在NBA來說就是禁止出場比賽；就學生而言，就是停學，就汽、機車駕駛人而言，就是吊扣駕駛執照。
eligible：符合資格的，與qualified略有不同，後者指「具有足夠能力的」。其【名詞】形式為eligibility，意為「資格(性)」。
