1. Williams tried to hide his frustrations by hollering at the basket support, but official Mark Wunderlich walked the baseline in time to hear Williams colorful description of the no-call.
Williams想要掩藏他的失望，對著籃球架的柱子不滿地大吼，但是裁判Mark Wunderlich恰好遊走在底線而聽見他對裁判沒有吹哨所做說「多采多姿的」的話。

hollering：因為不滿以大吼的方式表示抱怨。「對著」某事物或人的介系詞用 at 搭配。
support：支撐物，指籃球架的柱子。

walked the baseline：沿著底線而行。walk在此處為【及物動詞】，因此不需要接介系詞 along。
colorful description：colorful是「多采多姿的」、「生動的」之意。這種「多采多姿的」的話多半都不是好話，因此帶有一點諷刺的意味。

no-call：應該吹犯規或違例而未吹。但是，如果說 good no-call，是因為本來就沒有犯規或違例而未吹，不吹犯規或違例是正確的。

2. Jones suffered a gash on the top of his head in a third-quarter collision, took seven stitches, and returned with 5:49 left to play.
在比賽第三節時Jones撞到頭，使得他頭頂開花而縫了7針；必比賽尚餘5分49秒時，他返回場上續戰。

suffered：受了…傷。
gash：裂縫，裂開。
took seven stitches：縫了7針。此處的「針」可以用縫紉的術語stitch，但是「縫」卻不能用縫紉的術語 sew 而要用 take。

3. Golden State's Marc Jackson and Charlotte's Jamaal Magloire were ejected with 10:20 to play for scuffling under the basket. They became entangled while going after a rebound and were close to throwing punches when teammates separated them.

were ejected：另一種說法是 were thrown out of the game。eject是「驅逐出場」； expel 這個字也是同義字，但於運動方面時，eject較常用。戰鬥機出了緊急狀況，飛行員要跳傘求生時，發動機關使自己從坐位上「彈出」機艙，也用 eject 這個字。另外，從錄音機取出卡帶，從CD音響退出 CD片，從 DVD 機退出 DVD 片也都是用 eject。

4. Martin caused a fracas at the end of Orlando's 109-96 win over New Jersey by knocking McGrady to the floor with a forearm on a layup attempt with 2:57 to play.
在紐澤西籃網隊與奧蘭多魔術隊比賽還剩2分57秒時，Martin準備帶球上籃並用拐子把 McGrady打倒在地板上，引起一場打鬧。最後紐澤西籃網隊以 109 比 96 取勝奧蘭多魔術隊。

fracas：喧鬧，吵鬧，打鬧。
win over New Jersey：甲隊勝乙隊，win 後面介系詞用 over；甲隊敗給乙隊， loss 後面介系詞用to。
knocking McGrady to the floor：knock當做「撞(倒)」之意時，是【及物動詞】。請注意！knock當做「敲門」之意時，是【不及物動詞】，因此不能說 knock the door 而必須在 knock 和 the door 之間加上介系詞 on 或 at。

5. Kenyon Martin is developing a reputation as a dirty player, and his latest transgression -- a flagrant foul against Tracy McGrady -- might lead to his second suspension in less than three weeks.
Kenyon Martin打球很「髒」的惡名開始傳開。他最近的罪行-對 Tracy McGrady 的惡性犯規 - 可能導致他在不到三星期之內二度被罰停賽。

transgression：罪，罪行。
lead to：導致。
in less than three weeks：在不到三星期之內。
suspension：「停賽」、「禁止出場比賽」。「停學」處罰、「吊銷(扣)」駕照，也都用suspension。

6. But Stackhouse and Atkins hit back-to-back jumpers, then Stackhouse blocked Ilgauskas' shot and hit two free throws at the other end to make the score 90-82.
但是 Stackhouse 和 Atkins 連續跳投得分，然後 Stackhouse賞了Stackhouse一記「火鍋」，又在前場罰進兩球，使比數成為90比82。

back-to-back：「連續的」。「連續兩場比賽」是 back-to-back games，「連續三場比賽」可以說 back-to-back-to-back games。

7. The Kings caught the Suns flat-footed to start the game, hitting five of six 3-point attempts en route to a 23-7 lead with 6:03 left in the first period.

caught the Suns flat-footed：catch (someone) flat-footed是「使某人措手不及」之意。
attempts：出手投籃(企圖得分)。
en route to…：en route 是【法文】，意為「經由…的路途向…而去」，引申為「一路…達成…的結果」。

8. Playing in front of their franchise-record fifth straight home sellout and ninth this season, the Clippers beat the Bucks for the eighth time in their last 11 meetings in Los Angeles despite blowing the big lead.
在創新球隊紀錄的連續五場，也是本季球賽的第 9 場滿座觀眾面前，快艇隊雖然從大幅領先變成落後，但終於贏得在洛杉磯主場近 11 場比賽的第 8 場勝利。

franchise -record：球隊紀錄。franchise是「加盟球隊」。Steve Francis 是火箭隊的鎮隊之寶(franchise player)，因姓式 Francis 的拼字與 franchise 類似，因此綽號 Steve "Franchise"。
fifth straight：連續第五場。
sellout：客滿，滿座，門票售罄。還有一種說法是 have a capacity crowd，capacity是指體育館(或劇院、音樂廳…等)的全滿座位數量。
despite：「雖然」、「即使」，是【介系詞】而不是【連接詞】，後面接【名詞】。

9. The Miami Heat blew a chance at finally scoring 100 points. But they didn't let a win slip out of their grasp.
邁阿密熱浪隊本來得分可以破百卻搞砸了。不過，他們並沒有讓到手的勝利溜走。

blew a chance：blew就是「把…事搞砸了」，是【及物動詞】，後面接搞砸了的事件。
slip out of their grasp：slip out of…是「從…溜掉」，grasp是指(勝利的)「掌握」。

10. The Clippers especially faltered at the free-throw line, where they went just 14-for-25, missing three in overtime. None were as costly, though, as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot.
快艇隊特別是在罰球方面屢屢失手，罰25球僅中14，延長賽中更是三度落空。然而當 Lamar Odom 在 Davis 投入致勝的那球之前恰好兩罰不中，影響全局代價至高。

faltered at the free-throw line：falter原意是「支支吾吾」、「說話結結巴巴」、「遲疑」。當(汽車、機車)引擎反反覆覆似將熄火又沒熄火，彷彿在「遲疑」到底要不要熄火，可以用 falter 這個字來描述這樣的動作，而且還可以用它的同義字 hesitate 來表達。此處 faltered at the free-throw line 字面上是「在罰球線上遲疑」，是用來比喻「罰球一會兒進，一會兒不進」不能連續罰進球的「遲疑」現象。

"None were as costly, though, as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot." 裡的 though 不是連接詞而是副詞。它插在句中，有著「轉變語氣」的作用。一般在解讀句子時，可以先暫時忽略插入的字句，這樣會比較容易理解句子。本句成為 "None were as costly as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot."，是個 as… as 的句型；Lamar Odom missed…是修飾 the two 的關係子句，前面的 which (that) 因為是關係子句動詞 missed 的受詞，因而被省略了。本句可以看成 "None were as costly as the two (which) Lamar Odom missed." 句中 though 的副詞用法，也可以將它放在句尾，如："None were as costly as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot, though." 句中 " right" before…是「恰好」在…之前。

另外，並非所有以 -ly 結尾的單字都是形容詞； costly 就是個形容詞。通常名詞後面加上-ly結尾的單字是形容詞，如：friend 是名詞，加上字尾 -ly 後，friendly 成為形容詞；形容詞後面加上 -ly 結尾的單字才是副詞，如：different 是形容詞，後面加上-ly 結尾後，differently 成為副詞。只有少數的名詞以-ly結尾，如：anomaly「反常」。
