1. Abdur-Rahim and Houston's Kenny Thomas were ejected late in the third quarter after their battle for position in the lane escalated into a fight. Both threw punches before being separated along the baseline.
在比賽第三節，Abdur-Rahim 與休士頓(火箭隊的) Kenny Thomas 從在禁區卡位演變成一場幹架後，雙雙被驅逐出場。兩人在底線附近互毆後被隊友拉開。

ejected：驅逐出場。NBA規定，球員在球場上只要揮拳，立刻驅逐出場不赦，另加罰款，更嚴重者禁賽若干場。
battle for position：搶佔有利位置。

in the lane：此處 lane 指「禁區」、「三秒鐘區」，又叫做 painted area 或 key area。
escalated：(戰情)節節昇高，(戰情)擴大。「電扶梯」是 escalator，與「電梯」elevator不同。
threw punches：揮拳揍人。

2. Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "We didn't handle their pick-and-roll or dribble penetration and we didn't talk a few times. You name it, we got exposed.
76人隊教練 Larry Brown 說：「我們擋不住他們的『擋切戰術』或『帶球切入』，我們溝通不良。總而言之，我們是露洞百出。」

pick -and-roll：「擋切戰術」。pick是「單擋掩護」，又可說 screen。為隊友「做」單擋掩護可說 set pick (for somebody) 或 set screen (for somebody)。「傳切戰術」是 give-and-go。
dribble：「運球」。兩次「運球」是 double dribble。
penetration：突破，切入。

You name it：(千千萬萬個理由)隨你怎麼說，想說什麼就說什麼，總而言之。
we got exposed：意為「對方使我方暴露(出弱點)」，請注意本句是【get + 過去分詞】的句型，get 是「使…成為(某種狀態)」之意。

3. The Wizards again played short-handed, Richard Hamilton, the scorer who can best draw defenses away from Jordan, won't be back until next month, and Christian Laettner was sidelined again with a charley horse.
魔法師隊再度兵源短缺。除了 Jordan 以外最能吸引對方防守力的在 Richard Hamilton，在月底前將無法上場，而 Christian Laettner因為筋肉拉傷也掛病號。

short-handed：人手短缺，缺少人手的。
was sidelined：(被要求)坐在場邊 (sideline)，通常是因為受傷無法上場比賽。此處把 sideline 當做動詞用。
charley horse：筋肉僵硬，抽筋。charley 應該用大寫字母開頭 (Charley)。

4. Washington coach Doug Collins said. "They're physically tired. They're emotionally tired. We haven't had many easy wins. Everything we do we have to scratch and claw for. As we get a little tired, we get stagnant."
華盛頓(魔法師隊)教練 Doug Collins 說：「他們體力不支，又精神不濟。我們沒有幾場比賽贏得輕鬆。我們場場比賽都必須拼勁十足；當我們稍露疲態，就會原地踏步。」

scratch and claw：拼勁十足。scratch 和 claw 都是「抓」的意思，比喻像野獸般用爪子獵抓食物。
stagnant：停滯不動，毫無進展，原地踏步。原指「水」等的不流動，進而指「生活、心情、工作、人」等的沉滯、不振，又指「景氣」的蕭條。

Kidd說：「這一隊已節節順利，從一支能打季後賽的球隊成為聯盟的強隊之一。」

raised the bar：此處 bar 原指公路收費站、停車場常見的柵欄。柵欄放下時阻止車輛通行；柵欄昇起 (raised) 時，排除了障礙，車輛可以順利通行。

making the playoffs：有資格打「季後賽」(playoffs)。此處的 make 意為「做…(事)得以成功、有資格做…(事)」，例如：通過選拔測試，「成為」國手，可說 "make" the national team。

6. "We hung in there with Minnesota and then came in here and really cleaned the glass against these guys," Skiles said…

hung in there：堅持下去。
cleaned the glass：爭搶籃板球。原意指「擦玻璃」，但此「玻璃」並非指一般的「門窗玻璃」，而是指以「玻璃纖維」(fiberglass) 材質的籃板。

7. "Somebody wrote in the press the other day that we should be moving in the lottery direction, which is an absolutely asinine, insane thought process," Riley said.

press：媒體，新聞界。

asinine：驢子 (ass) 的。其他許多與動物有關的形容詞也是以 -ine 為字尾，例如 bovine 牛的，canine 犬的，corvine 烏鴉的，elephantine 象的，equine 馬的，feline 貓的，leonine 獅的，leporine 兔的，lupine 狼的，ovine 羊的，porcine 豬的，serpentine 蛇 (serpent) 的，ursine 熊的。

8. "I have a long memory," said Jordan, recalling Davis' antics in the 94-75 romp Nov. 27, which dropped the Wizards to 3-10 and prompted Jordan to utter "We stink. "

antics：滑稽古怪的動作，耍寶的動作，搞笑的動作。

romp：輕而易舉地獲勝或成功。
prompted：促使，驅使，激起，喚醒。
stink：本意是「發出臭味」，在【俚語】中是「極為差勁」或「臭名在外」之意。

9. After being booed off their own court at halftime, the Knicks came back from a 19-point second-half deficit and gave their fans something to cheer about.
在自家主場的比賽中場休息時被本地球迷噓後，尼克隊於下半場比賽中從落後 19 分追上比數，贏得本地球迷的喝采。

booed：「噓」，「喝倒采」。
came back：從落後追上比數。
deficit：比分相差之數。

easily：無疑地。
could've let it…：【假設語氣】的用法：could [would, should, might] + 動詞的過去分詞。

snowballing：「雪球效應」；雪球會越滾越大，比喻事件的迅速擴大。
The more … the better...：越…越…。請注意：在兩個 the 之後要用形容詞的比較級而非形容詞的的最高級。
